It cannot be, and the reason is worth understanding. Before any laser treatment we need a prescription that has been stable for at least a year, a cornea thick enough to treat safely, topography that rules out an irregular corneal shape, and a tear film healthy enough to cope with the recovery. If you wear contact lenses you will be asked to leave them off for a period before the measurements, because lenses temporarily alter the corneal surface and would distort the readings. Families usually drive down together, and a car can be brought right up to the entrance to drop someone off before parking. Evening consulting hours, Monday to Saturday between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM, also work well when a son or daughter is doing the driving after their own working day.

About LASIK Surgery

Who is this for?
You may be considered for LASIK if:
- You are over 18 years of age.
- Your spectacle prescription has been stable for at least one year.
- Your corneal thickness and topography fall within a safe range on testing.
- Your eyes are otherwise healthy, with a normal dilated retina examination.
LASIK is generally not advised if you are under 18, if your prescription is still changing, during pregnancy or while nursing, if you have significant dry eye, if you have a corneal condition such as keratoconus, or if your power is too high for the corneal thickness available. Some of these reasons are temporary; others mean a different procedure is safer for your eyes.

What the procedure involves
- Pre-operative testing: corneal topography, pachymetry, a dilated retina evaluation and a dry eye assessment. Contact lenses must be stopped for a period we will specify before these tests, because lenses alter the corneal readings.
- On the day of surgery, anaesthetic drops numb the eye. No injection and no general anaesthesia is required.
- A thin corneal flap is created with a femtosecond laser or an automated microkeratome, and gently lifted.
- The excimer laser, programmed with your prescription, delivers cool pulses to reshape the corneal tissue underneath.
- The flap is repositioned and reattaches naturally within minutes. No stitches are used.
- The eye is examined at the slit lamp before you leave, and you are given drops and written instructions.
Recovery and follow-up
Expect watering, light sensitivity and a gritty sensation for a few hours afterwards; resting with the eyes closed during that period helps. Many patients see a useful improvement in vision by the next day, though vision can fluctuate for some weeks while the eye heals.
Lubricating and antibiotic drops are prescribed for a defined period, and dryness lasting a few weeks to a few months is common. Protective shields at night, no eye rubbing, and avoiding swimming, dusty environments and eye makeup are advised for as long as your surgeon specifies.
Follow-up visits are scheduled for the next day and then at intervals. Outcomes vary between individuals: some eyes still need spectacles for certain tasks, and a small number may be considered for an enhancement later. This is discussed with you honestly before you decide, and no result can be promised in advance.

Candidacy is decided by measurement, not by preference. In general a suitable candidate is at least 18 years old, has had a stable spectacle prescription for about a year, and has enough corneal thickness for the tissue that the laser removes. Pregnancy or nursing, significant dry eye, keratoconus and other corneal disease usually mean LASIK is postponed or ruled out. LASIK treats the spectacle number you have at the time of surgery. It does not stop the age-related loss of near focus, called presbyopia, that most people begin to notice from their forties onward, so reading glasses may still be needed later in life regardless of how well the distance correction works. Many patients do become free of their distance glasses. Your surgeon will tell you what is realistic for your eyes after the evaluation.
