Glaucoma Treatment in Juhu – Divyajyoti Eye Hospital, Andheri West

Glaucoma care is measured in years, not visits, and that shapes how it works for our patients from Juhu and JVPD. Many are older residents who have lived in the same building or lane for decades, and the question they ask most is whether they can keep coming without a struggle. Our entrance is on the ground floor, directly opposite the 7 Bungalows bus depot, with no stairs to manage, and a son or daughter can drop a parent right at the door during our evening hours, between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM, Monday to Saturday. Because glaucoma often takes side vision first, patients may feel entirely well while nerve damage progresses. That is why we measure eye pressure, examine the drainage angle by gonioscopy, check corneal thickness with pachymetry, and record the optic nerve so that each visit can be compared with the last. If a parent or sibling has glaucoma, please mention it, because close relatives should be examined too.

Reaching us from Juhu

Divyajyoti Eye Hospital, Andheri West is about 10 to 15 minutes north from the Juhu and JVPD area.

From Juhu and the JVPD scheme the route north is familiar to anyone who lives there: up Gulmohar Road or along the Juhu Tara side, across Andheri West and on to J.P. Road until you reach the 7 Bungalows bus depot. Our ground-floor entrance is directly opposite the depot, which matters because a good number of our Juhu patients are older residents who have lived in the same building or lane for decades and would rather not manage stairs. Families usually drive down together, and a car can be brought right up to the entrance to drop someone off before parking. Evening consulting hours, Monday to Saturday between 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM, also work well when a son or daughter is doing the driving after their own working day.

About Glaucoma Treatment

Optic nerve damage usually linked to eye pressure. Early detection and steady, lifelong control protect the sight you still have.

Who is this for?

A glaucoma evaluation is advisable if you:

  • Are over 45 years of age, even if your vision seems fine.
  • Have a parent, sibling or child with glaucoma.
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • Have high myopia.
  • Have had an eye injury, or have used steroid drops or tablets over a long period.
  • Have been told that your eye pressure or your optic discs look suspicious.

Glaucoma can be well established while central vision still feels normal, which is why screening rather than symptoms should decide when you come in. Anyone already diagnosed needs lifelong review rather than a single visit. Full assessment, including gonioscopy and pachymetry, is available at our Andheri West OPD.

What the procedure involves

  1. Vision testing and a slit lamp examination of the front of the eye.
  2. Tonometry to measure intraocular pressure. Applanation tonometry is the reference standard, and readings are usually in the 12 to 21 mmHg range.
  3. Pachymetry to measure corneal thickness, so that the pressure reading can be interpreted correctly.
  4. Gonioscopy to view the drainage angle and establish whether the glaucoma is open-angle or angle-closure.
  5. Examination of the optic disc, supported by fundus photography so that the disc can be compared over time.
  6. Perimetry (visual field testing) to map blind spots, and OCT of the retinal nerve fibre layer where indicated.
  7. Treatment is then chosen: pressure-lowering eye drops, laser trabeculoplasty, YAG peripheral iridotomy where the angle is narrow, or filtering surgery such as trabeculectomy when drops and laser are not enough.

Recovery and follow-up

Glaucoma is a long-term condition rather than a one-time repair. Where drops are prescribed they usually have to be continued lifelong and at the same times each day. Stopping them because vision feels normal is the commonest avoidable cause of further loss.

After laser trabeculoplasty or a YAG iridotomy you can usually go home the same day, with drops for a short period and an eye pressure check soon afterwards. Mild blurring, glare or irritation for a day or two is common.

After filtering surgery such as trabeculectomy, healing is followed closely over several weeks with frequent visits, drops and the activity restrictions your surgeon specifies. Pressure and visual fields are then monitored at regular intervals for life.

With early detection and consistent treatment many patients retain useful vision, but that depends on keeping every review appointment, not on how the eye feels between them.

Common questions about Glaucoma Treatment in Juhu

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve gradually and, in its common forms, without pain or any early symptom you would notice. By the time vision feels affected, damage has usually already occurred, and sight lost to glaucoma cannot be restored. That is why routine eye pressure checks and examination of the optic nerve matter, particularly if someone in your family has glaucoma or you are being treated for diabetes.

A glaucoma work-up typically includes measurement of the pressure inside the eye, a careful examination of the optic nerve head, gonioscopy to look directly at the drainage angle of the eye and determine whether it is open or narrow, and pachymetry, because corneal thickness affects how a pressure reading should be interpreted. Fundus photography may be used to record the appearance of the optic nerve so that any change can be compared objectively at future visits.

In most cases glaucoma is controlled rather than cured, so drops or other treatment and regular review generally continue long term. Stopping treatment because the eye feels fine is the most common reason control is lost, since the condition gives no warning. Your doctor will set the follow-up interval that suits your type of glaucoma and how it is behaving.

Glaucoma damage is usually painless and starts in side vision, so you cannot rely on how your eyes feel. Regular checks and drops, as prescribed, are what protect your sight.

Yes. Glaucoma can run in families, so adult children and siblings should have an eye examination even if they have no symptoms.
