Living in Four Bungalows has one quiet benefit for anyone with diabetes: there is very little excuse to miss a retina check. Our centre is on the same stretch of J.P. Road, and most of our patients from here walk over or take a very brief auto ride, often on the way home from work. That matters because diabetic retinopathy usually causes no symptoms early on, and a yearly check is easy to postpone when your vision seems fine. Being close also helps on a practical level. Dilating drops blur near vision for a few hours, so you are not left managing a long trip afterwards, although we still suggest bringing someone with you. We examine the retina after dilation and may record it with fundus photography, so that the next visit can be compared directly. When treatment is needed, repeat visits for retinal laser or intravitreal injections are much less of a burden from a few minutes away. Bring your recent sugar reports and medicines list.
Divyajyoti Eye Hospital, Andheri West is a few minutes along J.P. Road; the closest catchment area to our centre.
Four Bungalows is our closest catchment area, sitting immediately next to 7 Bungalows on the same stretch of J.P. Road. For most residents this is a short walk or a very brief auto ride, and plenty of our patients from here simply come on foot in the evening. The hospital is on the ground floor of Jyoti Apartment, directly opposite the 7 Bungalows bus depot, so there are no stairs to negotiate at the entrance, which is one reason elderly patients from the surrounding lanes find it manageable to come without much planning. Being this close also makes multi-visit care straightforward, whether that is a post-operative check, a repeat pressure reading or a laser follow-up. With OPD from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday to Saturday, many people stop in on the way home.

Diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels long before vision changes. Regular dilated retina checks find it while treatment works best.
You should have a retina evaluation if you:
How often you need to return depends on what is found. Some patients need an annual check, while those with established retinopathy or macular swelling need closer follow-up. Your doctor will set that interval for you after examining both eyes.
Your pupils stay dilated for a few hours after examination, so bring sunglasses and arrange for someone else to take you home rather than driving yourself.
After retinal laser you may notice blurring, glare or spots for a day or two, and a mild headache is common. Laser mainly stabilises vision and prevents further loss; it does not usually restore vision that has already gone. Depending on severity, several sittings may be needed, with periodic evaluation afterwards.
After an intravitreal injection the eye may feel gritty and look slightly red for a day, and a small floating bubble may be visible for a short time. The effect of injections is temporary, so a repeating schedule is usual until the retina stabilises.
Diabetic retinopathy needs lifelong follow-up even after successful treatment, because it can progress again. Report any sudden increase in floaters, a curtain across the vision or a sudden drop in vision without waiting for your next appointment.
Yes. Diabetic retinopathy can be present and progressing well before there is any change you can notice in your sight. A dilated examination of the retina is the only reliable way to find it at that early stage, which is exactly the stage at which it is easiest to manage. Waiting for symptoms means waiting until the condition has already advanced.
Many people living with diabetes are reviewed once a year, and more frequently if changes have already been found, if blood sugar control has been unstable, or during pregnancy. There is no single interval that suits everyone. Your doctor will set the interval based on what the examination actually shows in your eyes.
Fundus photography is used to document the retina so that its appearance can be compared accurately from visit to visit rather than from memory. Depending on what is found, treatment may include retinal laser, which is carried out at the hospital. Alongside any eye treatment, control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol remains essential, because that is what governs how the retinopathy behaves over time. Your doctor will explain which of these applies to you.
Usually at least once a year, or more often if retinopathy has been found. Your doctor will set the interval after your examination.
Many patients from Four Bungalows do, but near vision is blurred and bright lights are uncomfortable, so it is wise to have someone with you. Please do not drive yourself.
Your recent blood sugar or HbA1c reports, your list of medicines, your glasses and any previous eye records.
